The first thought when I saw this book first was that why the title is to ‘kill something?’ It’s quite frightening, and I didn’t think that it’s mysterious novel like Sherlock Holmes. It was known as ‘one of the greatest American Literature,’ and it wouldn’t be true if it were a mystery.
This is just my first feeling about this book.
I had opportunity to read it a year ago. I didn’t know about this book, but I had a special English camp which is called ‘IET Camp.’ It was held in Daewon Foreign Language High School. I reckon this is held right now, too. This program is opened every winter, in order for them to learn money(maybe). But there, I read this book for that class.
I was in troble reading it in an English. My English ability was not good enough to read English novel at that time(I think I also have little trouble right now). But as we watch the movie of it, and I also read the Korean translated book. So I could understand gradually. I didn’t feel any touchful thing at that time. I just enjoyed the movie.
However, I have a chance to read it again in my Master Reading class. Our book is again “To Kill A Mockingbird.” Then, after reading it, I felt so sorry for Tom Robinson and Atticus.
The story was like this:
Around in 1930s, there was Scout who is the main character, Jem who is her brother, Dill who is Scout and Jem’s friend, and Atticus who is the Scout’s father as well as lawyer. They lived in Maycomb, where there was prejudice about white and black. They really hate the black. One day, Tom Robinson who is black is accused of raping a white woman. But actually, he did not rape her. Atticus has to defend Tom. He gave a fantastic, flawless, perfect reason to everybody. No one could deny the evidence. However, the jury verdict’s was that Tom was guilty. I was nearly cried at this part. I was furious about the town’s people.
This allowed many people around the world about the problem they had during that time. The author of this book, Harper Lee was trying to say that what we are thinking is wrong and she is right.
I hope if there are people like KKK or biased to race, they should change their mind soon. By having the first black president, Barack Obama, people should aware the wrongness of prejudice against race.
